Kolkata Police on Thursday constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged tablet money scam case, officials said.
At least 10 cases have been registered at different police stations in Kolkata in connection with the alleged scam wherein funds meant for tablets and smartphones to be provided to school students were siphoned off by hacking the West Bengal Education Department’s website.
Police arrested two people from North Dinjapur’s Chopra in the case. A total of three cases have been registered under Kolkata Police’s Sarsuna, Jadavpur and Kasba police stations as of now.
The West Bengal Police has arrested a total of 10 individuals in connection with the alleged fraud that diverted government funds intended to help 11th and 12th-grade students purchase tablets and smartphones.
According to police, the suspects gained unauthorised access to the education department’s portal and siphoned off the funds.
It is alleged that over 300 eligible students across various districts did not receive Rs 10,000 each that was to be provided to them as aid.
The amount was to be provided under the state government’s ‘Taruner Swapna’ scheme which was launched for students to buy tabs and smartphones for educational purposes.
